A year later inflation adjustments, and free firewood, Parris accepted the job as Village minister r(ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). He moved to Salem Village with his wife Elizabeth, his six year old daughter Betty, niece Abagail Williams, and his Indian slave Tituba (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Sometime during February of 1692 young Betty Parris became strangely ill (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsà ¢â¬ ). The cause of her symptoms seemed to match those of Ergot (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Bettyââ¬â¢s behavior in some ways mirrored that of witch craft (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠).It was easy to believe with an Indian war raging less than several miles away that the devil was close in hand (An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Talk of witch craft increased when other playmates of Bettyââ¬â¢s began to exhibit similar unusual behavior (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). William Griggs, a doctor, was called in to examine the girls he suggested that the girlââ¬â¢s problems might have a supernatural origin (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). The number of girls afflicted continued to grow rising to seven (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). The girls contorted into poses, fell down into frozen postures, and complained of biting and pinching sensations (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ).Sometime after February 25 and 29 the first three accused of witch craft w ere Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborn (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Tituba was an obvious choice (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Sarah Good was a beggar (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Sarah Osborn was old and had not attended a church for over a year (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Tituba was the first witch to admit to doing witch craft (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Soon the spectral forms of other women attacking the afflicted girls came into the court rooms (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ).Martha Corey, Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Cloyce, and Mary Easty were accused of witch craft during a March 20 church service (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Dorcas Good, four-year-old daughter of Sarah Good, became the first child to be accused of witch craft when three of the girls complained that they were bitten by the specter of Dorcas (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Deliverance Hobbs became the second witch to confess for doing witch craft (ââ¬Å"An A ccount ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). The first accused witch to be brought to trial at the local church was Bridget Bishop (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ).At Bishopââ¬â¢s trial on June 2 a field hand testified that he saw Bishopââ¬â¢s image stealing eggs and then saw her transform herself into a cat (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Bishopââ¬â¢s jury returned a verdict of guilty on June 10 (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Bishop was carted to Gallows Hill and hanged (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). As the summer of 1692 warmed, the pace of trials picked up (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). John Proctor was openly critical of the trial and paid for his skepticism with his life (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). No execution caused more unease in Salem than that of the villageââ¬â¢s ex minister, George Burroughs (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ).Burroughs was identified by several of his accusers as the ringleader of the witches (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢ ⬠). Among the thirty accusers of Burroughs was nineteen-year-old Mercy Lewis that offered unusually vivid testimony against Burroughs saying that he had came to her in the middle of the night and made her sign the Devils book (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). Burroughs became guilty and took to Gallows hill to be hanged he recited the Lordââ¬â¢s Prayer perfectly which greatly moved people (ââ¬Å"An Account ofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ). The Lordââ¬â¢s Prayer: Our father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, As in heaven, so on earth. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we Also have forgiven our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but Deliver us from evil: for thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory Forever. Amen. One victim of Salem witch-hunt was not hung his name was Giles Corey (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). He died from being pressed to death by stones (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). T hree days after Giles Coreyââ¬â¢s death on September 22 eight more convicted witches were hung (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠).They were the last victims of the witch-hunt (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). With spectral evidence not admitted, twenty-eight of the last thirty-three witchcraft trials ended in acquittals (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). In May of 1693, all remaining accused or convicted witches were released from prison (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). By the time witch-hunt ended nineteen convicted witches were executed (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). And at least four accused witches had died in prison (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Then one man was pressed to death by stones (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠).About one or two hundred other persons were arrested and imprisoned on witch craft charges and two dogs were executed as suspected accomplices of witches (ââ¬Å"Salem Witch Trialsâ⬠). Psychology â⬠Stereotype Essay
Prejudice means the attitude toward the members of some group based solely on their membership in that group and it can be positive or negative. The main reason of prejudice is most probably stereotyping and it involves generalizations about the typical characteristics of members of the groups. Prejudice is ubiquitous and it affects all of us and it sometimes cause negative consequences. Hence, many people search works or studies to remove prejudice effects. We also learn from texts which is called ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Understanding Prejudice and ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢The Cognitive Processââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ by Gordon W. Allport. In addition George Aliken says â⬠If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed, and color, we would find some other causes for prejudice by noon. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ It shows that prejudice cannot be removed totally and I strongly agree with this statement. In other words, people cannot have a chance to get rid of prejudices because of many stereotypes, a fear of the unfamiliar and the effects of social environment. Stereotypes is the main factor why it is impossible to get rid of prejudice totally. Each society has many stereotypes about different issues and it is impossible to isolate people from society not to affected these stereotypes. To begin with, stereotypes may cause dangerous results if they are taught as truths especially for children. It is called early learning process and it includes passive acceptance of information and lack of awareness. (Cole, Jim Understanding Prejudice) It also donââ¬â¢t give opportunity to children to test these stereotypes or any information which is given by instructors or adults. I mean that especially children can gain many new stereotypes easily and they may believe as a truth. If this condition happens, it would very difficult to change or manipulate these belief systems because many psychologists argue that childhood is most important process to shape character and many characteristic feature are gained at childhood. (http://psychology. about. com/od/developmentalpsychology/a/childdevtheory. htm) For example, a teacher who hates black people can teach that black people are bad and even evil. It is undoubted fact that children who are in that classroom is influenced badly by this approach because students especially who are in elementary school trust their teacher completely. It can affect whole life of people and it is difficult to prevent. On the other hand, any experience cause to acquire new and dangerous stereotypes. Actually, experiences are more effective way to gain stereotypes because memory generally cannot be forgotten but inputs are easily forgotten in a short time. According to research, Children who have bad childhood memory which cause change the viewpoint toward any group say that these kind of events influence whole life. It is way to gain stereotypes and it may cause discrimination if event relates to black people or muslim people. Children start to think all black people bad and we should avoid them, if any black people stole their money or beat them.. These kind of event affect all children and they cannot forget even now. (http://www. ehow. com/info_8621376_bad-childhood-affect-relationships. html) There is important point to have stereotypes, it does not matter how you acquire it. Sometimes national belief or values cause prejudice, sometimes unconscious people cause it. Prejudice prevent people from listening the other people and this is a big obstacle to developing empathy skills. Hence, stereotypes is main factor to acquire prejudice and also it is main obstacle to get rid of prejudice. Being a part of any group is so important thing for many people. They think that they cannot live without this because they believe that groups prevent them from being alone and it is necessary to compete others. There is competition between group members so being a part of a group is important point. (Dugan, A. Maire Prejudice) However, it causes prejudice against other groups because group members start to consider other belief system is completely wrong and they donââ¬â¢t accept any other beliefs because of the fear of unfamiliar. To begin with, each political or economic group have common goal and they have to have strict approach about some issues to achieve that. These kind of approach definitely consist of some prejudice against others. Each group member feel thinking like this on the contrary case my group lose competition they think out of group. Moreover, people may start to care about people who are like them. I mean that people may judge others because of their groups without any reason so they donââ¬â¢t care about issues which belongs others. For instance, an earthquake happened three months ago and many people sent many aid but some people did not sent because of some ridiculous reasons such as discrimination. They think that people who live in Van may support terrorist group and they did not deserve any aid. However, I think that anybody can think like this, there is one explanation to understand this situation and it is being a part of group. The conflict between their group and other groups prevent people from thinking logically and as a result of this they donââ¬â¢t send any aid materials for the victim of earthquake for this situation. I think that this kind of prejudice is very dangerous and it is very troublesome. People can not think freely until they leave group because if they resist group or reject to accept some group prejudices, they most probably face being out of group. Hence, prejudices which generate being a part of group are irrepressible. Prejudices does not depends on any logical reasons, they include dogmatical causes and people does not think whether it is true or not. People can behave differently in spite of under the some conditions toward two different people. This situation may conclude in a two different way. Firstly, people recede from one group. Therefore, people has negative attitude to this group. On the other hand, people get closer their own group. It may be seen a positive result of prejudice. If people feel belonging one group, they will start to love group members without any reason and they does not aware of group membersââ¬â¢ mistakes. The while, sometimes they start to hate other people because any group members hate them. This enhance connection between group members but if we consider others, situation will vice versa. People start to think like other group members, they afraid to show thoughts when they think differently group members. Thus, it is starting to change the way people think. Prejudices cause sometimes behavioral changes. It is called discrimination. Problem start to be insoluble when people act. Behaviours return to habits and then free thinking start to get lost. As a resut of this, people are categorised us and others. Some people will be scapegoat because of the nature of categories and some people will be heroes because of same reason. For instance, many negroes are famous athletes and many famous athletes are national heroes; then many negroes are national heroes. It is ridiculous but it is a result of prejudice. Prejudices raise intolerant people and these people suppose that their all thoughts and beliefs correct. Hence, it is impossible to get rid of prejudices. Prejudices originate various reasons or factors and almost all people have some prejudices because getting rid of these is pretty difficult for people. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Everyone is a prisoner of his own experiences. No one can eliminate prejudices ââ¬â just recognize themââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ ââ¬â Edward Roscoe Murrow. Actually it is important point to recognize them because many people does not aware of this during whole life. However, We can reduce the effects of prejudice but it is impossible to remove prejudice because of stereotypes, being a part of group member and the effects of prejudice on way of thinking and connection between people . It may only possible to live in island singly but I am not sure for this. WORK CITES BOOK ENTRY I donââ¬â¢t use any book. ARTICLE ENTRY. My First Semester At The University Of Southern Indiana
From the lustful feeling consumed within my soul I gained by writing obstructed by the overbearing slaughter of never being good enough, reality struck. I knew I needed to find an English class that would be able to help me overcome my life long writing obstacles and that is exactly what English 100 did for me. Ever since a young age, English has never been my strong point. The most common errors I seemed to struggle with consisted of grammar, putting my thoughts into words, and knowing the difference between nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Honestly, English before college seemed pointless and monotone, there wasn t a class i hated more. I never thought I would be able to overcome the predicament outlook that college held over me. Now, after surviving my first semester at the University of Southern Indiana I have procured new adroitness within my English class. A small list of the aspects I have accomplished from English 100 are: constructing a strong thesis statement, what makes a pap er good or bad, correctly using punctuation, transitions, and clearly describing objects to create a vivid image. Thanks to beginning a new school year about 200 miles away from everything I once knew, I quickly clung onto the proposition of taking everything more seriously. For starters, I began to touch up my writing skills and pay close attention to everything English class had to offer me. The Debate Over Abortion On Abortion Essay - 1682 Words
So long as political debate has existed in America, there has been a strong tension between the ideologies of conservatism and liberalism. While there are numerous differences between the two ideologies, the core of each is expressed clearly through the modern debate of abortion. The vision, ideals, and assumptions of each ideology can be identified through the way in which each ideology argues its position on abortion. The debate over abortion has been taking place since the 19th century. Abortions were legal until the mid-1800s when states began to outlaw them. When the Roe vs Wade decision was made in 1973, laws affecting abortions existed in 46 states. This Supreme Court decision affirmed the right for women to have abortions. While the decision was made over forty years ago, the public debate is as fierce as ever. A popular political action within the anti-abortion movement is to protest outside of Planned Parenthood facilities. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization wh ich provides reproductive planning and services to women. Anti-abortion activists have targeted Planned Parenthood because a small percentage of their services include abortion. As a result of the protests, as well as outrage caused by hidden video from inside a Planned Parenthood center, several states have defunded the organization. It should be noted that government money is not used at Planned Parenthood to conduct abortions. There are two main viewpoints on the issue of abortion. Immanuel Kant Enlightenment Essay Example For Students
Immanuel Kant Enlightenment Essay What is enlightenment? Immanuel Kant attempts to clarify the meaning of enlightenment while composing the essay, ââ¬Å"What is Enlightenment?â⬠. This document was written in response to political and social changes brought about by King Frederick of Prussia. The goal of Kantââ¬â¢s essay was to discuss what the nature of enlightenment was. It also taught one how enlightenment can be brought about in the general public. Kant explains that, ââ¬Å"enlightenment is manââ¬â¢s release from his self-incurred tutelageâ⬠(Kant 85). Tutelage is manââ¬â¢s incompetence to have direction for oneself. In other words, enlightenment is the progress of a society through the free activity of rational thought and scholarly critique. Kant feels that if we are going to liberate ourselves from tutelage then we must be able to use our freedom whenever we want. One can try to revolt but itââ¬â¢s most definitely going to fail. One can try to over-throw and then become the tutor themselves. This revolution will not lead to enlightenment, but rather lead to ongoing tutelage. One prince said that the coming about of enlightenment will only arrive if you, ââ¬Å"Argue as much as you will, and about what you will, but obey!â⬠(Kant 87). In short, this means you can argue but you canââ¬â¢t revolt. Kant seemed to take this into account when qualifying what will bring about enlightenment. Kant states, ââ¬Å"the public use of oneââ¬â¢s reason must always be free, and it alone can bring about enlightenment among men. The private use of reason, on the other hand, may often be very narrowly restricted without particularly hindering the progress of enlightenment. By the public use of oneââ¬â¢s reason I understand the use of which a person makes of it as a scholar before the reading public. Private use I call that which may make of it in a particular civil post or office which is entrusted to himâ⬠(Kant 87). In other words, there are two types of reasoning: public and private. If one can produce an argument and present it to the public with the intentions of making progress, they are using public use of reasoning. Rational workers in a specific occupation use the private use of reasoning. If one has a specific job they use reason to complete their task. This is done privately because the public need not know. In private use one must obey or the completion of the task is impossible. Kant uses many examples of the difference between the public and private use of reasoning. If soldiers refused to follow commands then there would be no military. So, one solider may follow commands in which he disagrees with, but will later critique what he believes. This means that he will follow the commands as his private use of reasoning and then will speak out his complaints as his public use of reasoning. Another example used by Kant is how a citizen must pay taxes as his duty or his private use of reasoning. As a public use of reason he expresses his thoughts on the overpaying and inappropriateness of the levies. Kantââ¬â¢s main example has to do with clergymen and changing the symbol of the church as well as better organization. As a priest, one can not denounce the symbol of the church with his fellow clergymen. On the other hand, the priest can be a scholar and articulate his views in order to make progress within the church. Overall, Kant tries to enlighten us that it will never become impossible for the clergyman to fulfill his duties of office, this being the private use of reason. At the same time he can fulfill his responsibilities to the public to make progress, this being public use of reasoning. Kant states, ââ¬Å"For if he believed he had found such in them, he could not conscientiously discharge the duties of his office; he would have to give it up (Kant 88). This implies that if it becomes contradictory to you, then it is impossible to fulfill both sides of reason. .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 , .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .postImageUrl , .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 , .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:hover , .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:visited , .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:active { border:0!important; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:active , .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8 .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3ee7a067f83bbb37d2d11681157d3dc8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The General Effects of Fire on EssayKant feels that we do not live in an enlightened age, but rather an age of enlightenment. The Great Napster Essays - Metallica, Online Music Stores, Napster
The Great Napster THE GREAT NAPSTER Napster is innovative file-sharing software that lets an online community of music lovers trade MP3 files free of charge. You search for a song by name, and a list of people who have it pops up and you can choose whomever you want to get it from, and in addition, you can see and download any other songs that they may have in their files. We feel like it is a good thing because it does have some positive aspects: its good for finding older music that isnt in production anymore, you can sample songs from groups before you buy their music, it gives less popular musicians a chance to have their music heard, and it provides a forum for people with similar music interests to come together. Napster might be able to offer you a chance at finding older music that just isnt in production anymore. For example, you cant find your favorite music from the 70s or 80s in music stores today unless it was a big hit back then. Our resources are very limited as to how we can come across these songs. Music stores today tend to have only a limited stock of what they perceive to be popular. You might be looking for theme songs for old movies or TV shows that are hard to find, and chances are you will be able to find them on Napster. One user says, The first weekend that I tried Napster I found twelve songs that Id been hunting for over fifteen years to find! These are songs Ive been going in to record stores over the years and asking for- (Eclectic) Using Napster, its great how you can sample songs from groups before you buy their music. Sometimes we hear of groups, whether its by commercial or promotion of an upcoming concert, and were not really sure of who they are. What if we mistake one artist for another?, Its not too much fun wasting money on the wrong group. Music is almost always non-refundable, because they assume that if youre returning it, you have already taped it. With Napster, we can listen to a song and sample it so to speak. We may hear a song and like it but not know who sings it. Napster is a tool that we can use to find out who the artist is and so we can go purchase the music from the store. A recent study of more than 2,200 online music fans by Jupiter Communications suggests that users of Napster and other music-sharing programs are 45 percent more likely to increase their music purchasing than fans who arent trading digital bootlegs online. Napster also gives less popular musicians a chance to have their music heard. Lots of underground musicians who dont have the money for advertisement and promotions put their own music on Napster so they can gain some fame and recognition. This free advertising gets them known, at which point they can get on their feet and start to make money by selling albums and holding concerts. Artists just want to be heard. If they can make a living out of it, thats simply a bonus. Pete Townshend, The Who Napster also provides a forum for people with similar music interests to come together. There are plenty of chat rooms available titled by genre. For example, you can go into an 80s room, and it shows you how many people are in the room, how many songs they have available to you, and their connection speed. You can click on someone and share every file they have and weed through it later, or if youre looking for something more specific, you can make requests, and the buddies in the room speak out. This is a great way to meet fellow fans. You make lots of friends very easily because you know that they are there for the same purpose as you. Bravo to Napster for allowing more social distribution of nostalgic songs!- WarpKat,MIS/IS/IT, Consulting/Systems Integrator Napster was a great idea, with all of the great aspects of finding old music, sampling before buying, giving underground musicians a chance, and meeting new people. Someone shouldve come out with it sooner.
